Quick Tomato Sauce

From Cooks Illustrated May/June 2009:

2 T butter
1/4 c. grated onion
1/4 t. dried oregano
salt to taste
2 medium cloves of garlic, minced or pressed
1 (28 oz) can of crushed tomatoes
1/4 t. sugar
2 T coarsely chopped fresh basil leaves
1 T olive oil

Heat butter in saucepan, add onion, oregano; cook until golden brown. Add garlic; cook about 30 seconds. Add tomatoes and sugar. Increase heat to high, simmer. Lower heat and simmer until thickened, about 10 minutes. Turn off heat add basil and oil, season with salt and pepper.

(Add hot pepper flakes too!)
